Over 50 private school teachers in Oshodi-Isolo area of Lagos State have been given a token of N5,000 each by a politician, Adebanji ‘Skibanj’ Gbeleyi, to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since March, schools have remained shut to curtail the spread of the virus, leaving many private school teachers and school owners idle with no income or salary.
This, according to Gbeleyi, prompted his scheme tagged: “Skibanj Education Support Initiative” to reach out to private teachers in Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 1.
Speaking at the event held last Satruday, at Oshodi, Gbeleyi stressed that teachers were the foundation of a good student.
“I am supporting the welfare of school teachers because if the school infrastructure is good and the teachers are not well taken care of, then it like living in a mansion without root,” he said.
Continuing, Gbeleyi, who is an aspirant for the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2019, said that the project was designed to support the private school teachers in his locality.
“I know the pains our teachers go through, especially during this COVID-19 period, because I was once a teacher myself. This is one of the reasons I came up with this initiative to see how I can contribute my quota to the development of Oshodi-Isolo area of Lagos State.”
He, however, urged the government and school owners to prioritise the welfare of teachers if truly we want growth in our nation.
Some of the beneficiaries include Mrs Oladidupo Olabisi Odukoya of Goldview Private School; Mrs Ajayi Anuoluwapo of Krystal Bal Nur/Pry School; Miss Fumilayo Adeniyi of Bessie International Nur/Pry School among others.
